December 2016 Find

December 31, 2016

At 1536 hrs on December 28th, 2016, Ptl. J. McCoy of the Kettering Police Department in Ohio conducted a traffic stop for a minor traffic violation in the area of Research and Rainbow. The driver was nervous, had a questionable story of what he was doing and had a narcotic history. Consent to search was asked for and denied by the driver, so a Police Canine Team was summoned to the scene. Ptl. Andrew Disalvo and K9 Nash responded to the K9 request. Ptl. Disalvo and K9 Nash are certified through the Ohio Peace Training Academy (OPOTA) and the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) for Patrol and Narcotic functions.

Ptl. Disalvo deployed K9 Nash on the suspect vehicle, which was a pick-up truck with a tool box attached to the bed. K9 Nash began showing a change in behavior in the area of the driver’s door and eventually showed a final indication by barking at the tool box area. A search of the vehicle was conducted as a result of the positive indication by K9 Nash. Inside the cab of the truck was a plastic bag that contained a large quantity of “marijuana suckers” (150 grams). The search of the tool box in the bed of the truck yielded 2 clear plastic bags containing psylocibin mushrooms (80 grams total). In addition, over $1700 in cash was located on the suspect’s person at the time of arrest.

All drugs and cash was seized and the suspect charged with Drug Trafficking, Drug Possession and Possession of Criminal Tools. Without the use and exemplary performance of K9 Nash, the discovery of these narcotics and seizure of cash would not have been possible.
