May 2017 Catch

OFFICER DOUGHMAN

K-9 HELIX

MONROE POLICE DEPARTMENT

Officer Doughman and his canine partner Helix were dispatched to assist Middletown Police, where a subject assaulted a police officer and had taken the officers taser and fled on foot. On arrival Officer Doughman deployed his canine Helix from the last seen location of the suspect. A perimeter in the surrounding area had been set up. Officer Doughman and his canine partner Helix began tracking between the houses in the 900 block of Delaware to the 1300 block of Woodlawn Ave. Officer Doughman and his canine partner Helix then headed toward 14th Ave and Verity. Officer Doughman and his canine partner Helix made a sharp turn toward 1315 Woodside Ave toward a heavily vegetated wooded tree line. As Officer Doughman’s canine partner Helix entered the wood line he apprehended the suspect by his back left shoulder blade. The subject exited the wood line standing with the canine still attached. As the canine was called off, officers had to physically take control of the suspect and escort him to the ground to place him in custody.

The suspect Johnny Shepherd was charged with assault on police officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and theft for the taser which was recovered, which he had dropped while fleeing from officers.

Respectfully submitted,

Sgt Andy Warrick
